The World ends in 2012

Bought the Cult of Cartman dvd set to kill the weekend. Each episode of this "best of" South Park set has a lesson/preview/vignette featuring Eric Cartman. One of his lessons concluded with "and remember, the world ends in 2012".
That just got me to thinking how that idea is going to be spread even further in the next couple of years. Here's a pretty basic summary of the idea, basic because I'm not a New Age type and haven't devoted myself to studying Mayan culture.
Basically the Mayans have a different calendar than the Gregorian calender. Their calendar fit their religious/cultural beliefs and probably had more to do with growing/farming cycles than predicting the future, but that's debatable. What most doomsday/sci-fi/Armageddon types have focused on is the date December 21, 2012. That's because this is the start of the last cycle of the Mayan fourth age. And this idea is looking very profitable, both creatively and financially.
Besides South Park and the gloom and doom prophesy shows on the History Channel and the Discovery Channel, there is already a ton of media out there with this thought. The Mayan Prophesies, Galactic Alignment and various other New Age books point out this date. Even computer programs (not videogames/PC games, but actual theoretical science based on math) use this date. There are two blockbuster movies in development with the title 2012, one of which is going to be a big budget Sony deal.
Is it really the end of the world? I doubt it. I even have a problem with the 2012 date. If the end cycle starts on the 2012 date, then shouldn't the end of the world be at the end of that cycle? That would make the end date some time in March 2407. Its like the Millenium debate on Seinfeld where Millenium New Year was being planned and Newman and Kramer had parties 1 year apart. So was 1999 New Year the date or 2000 New Year the date? Didn't care then and I don't care about when this Mayan "cycle" ends.
But 2012 as an end date is an interesting idea and one that will probably entertain/terrify until the date passes like the Y2K thing. Can't wait to see the next pop culture reference to the date. And maybe CNN can scare us into panic mode for this like they did for the bailout/trigger of a new Great Depression thing they just did.
Personally, I'd be more worried when the Cubs win the World Series. That is the true sign of the Apocalypse.
