The Comics Pull List (Oct. 15)
October 14th 2008 05:23
Plenty to choose from this week and plenty of appeal to any tastes and demos. Tons of Manga releases, a couple of Young Reader releases, and of course plenty of major companies and indy fare to choose from.
Amazing Spider-Man #573 is coming out and I still won't pick up the spider titles regularly. But this is a special issue with a Stephen Colbert back-up story (He's running for President of the US in the Marvel U if you can handle the truthines) and the cover alone is worth the money for any fans of The Colbert Report.
Secret Invasion wise, there are 5 tie-in issues offered by Marvel. I absolutely love Guardians of the Galaxy since the Marvel universe was almost completely devoid of space character based comics in recent years and absence has made the heart yearn in that respect. Mighty Avengers is the only other tie-in I'd pick up. Just can't get into the Front-Lines. Gave 2 issues a shot during Civil War and wasn't impressed by the POV nor was I entertained.
Ultimate Origins #5 is out and this ties into the Ultimatum arc. Ultimatum's supposed to have been building since the start of the Ultimate Marvel titles, so that alone increases the curiosity factor. That kind of build does tend to disappoint though.
Batman and the Outsiders #12 is out and is a Batman RIP tie-in. As stated last week, not into that story arc. Besides RIP, the issue promises a death of a character. Sorry, but this isn't the 80's when the death of a major character meant something and sold books. This is a time when characters are brought back and forth to where death is meaningless in comic book terms.
JSA #19 will be on the shelves and is still an underrated title. Great Art, very good writing and well paced stories for the most part. Not into the Gog/Magog arc, but I'm sure they're going somewhere with it so I'll stick around.
Final Crisis Legion of 3 worlds #2....man that's a long title. This is the title where Johns probably resolves the question of whether Superboy-Prime is redeemable. Prime fans will be into that I guess, not sure if its for me.
Booster Gold #13...is it just me or does this title read like titles from the JLI years? Not a bad thing to me as every other title around is so wrapped up in a Crisis or a Secret or choosing sides to the point where you go where's the story? New arc, so hopefully it stays entertaining.
Savage Dragon has an issue out and Barrack Obama is on the cover. Collectible ish there for obvious reasons.
Street Fighter II Turbo is out and will be in the beating the dead horse bins by the next day.
Simpsons Comics is still fresh and witty, something you can't always say about the TV series nowadays.
On the Manga front, Cartoon Network fans should be happy because Inu Yasha, One Piece and Full Metal Alchemist have new issues out Wednesday. Hikaru No Go is out for you Manga-Sports fans. Around 15 other Manga titles out as well, though I'm not an authority so you have to browse yourselves.
Young Readers get a Hannah Montana Ani-Manga, Marvel Adventures Avengers has a date issue, and High School Musical has a trade out.
Good variety of titles coming out and you should be hard pressed not to spend more than $20 for the week. But that isn't always wise in this economy so spend wisely.
