South Park's season premiere

Wow, South Park sure has come a long way as a show.
Honestly, when it first started I found it funny for completely different reasons than I do now. It used to be irreverent, over-the-top humor with the novelty of little kids cursing and making light of celebrities.
Somewhere in the last 10 years, it regularly sprinkled in social commentary. And minor characters have actually had some development, which is more than can be said for most shows that are supposed to be good.
The premiere last night was no exception. The growth of China as an industrial nation and a world power is the main backdrop of the secondary plot. The secondary plot also has a focus on Cartman and Butters and they highlight how characters have grown on the show. Cartman went from the foul mouthed kid that the creators used for fat jokes to a semi-evil, semi-political character with creative ideas and leadership skills. Butters went from strictly background to the innocent kid that keeps a positive outlook despite bad things constantly happening around him. Having Cartman accept the idea of China's emerging place in the world as he is the most stubborn, intolerant character honestly made me think of the new world order.
The main hook of the "rape" of an important character ends up being a commentary on Hollywood cashing in on a franchise when the well has run dry creatively. Implying that Indy has jumped the shark wtih the addition of a younger character and the links to Roswell were valid points. Incorporating scenes from Deliverance and The Accused made me chuckle in their context, as opposed to the regular scenes where you generally turn away. They even gave a different POV to the movie through innocent, naive Butters who just saw the movie as a movie on its own merits.
Promising start to the season to a still entertaining show.
