All Knowing Geek - October 2008

Fantasy NFL Week 9

October 31st 2008 18:22
Looks like a good week for offense even without SD and NO.

QB
Not seeing favorable matchups for the top guys. I can never not start an elite guy, but just don't see a good matchup for the usual suspects. Lookin at Garcia to pick on KC's rooks. Looking at Orton (ugh) because its against Detroit. And I'd guess StL and ARZ go to the air a lot. Maybe Frerrotte if Houston overadjusts for Adrian Peterson. Cassell could also do well with all of Indy's injuries on the secondary. No trouble finding a QB again this week.

HB
All Day Adrian Peterson lookin like the man this week. Houston's D is bad on the road, particularly against the run. Miami's backs should do well against Denver's Ole run defense. Question would be which guy to get. ESPN's gurus thinking Fargas will be this week's Mewelde Moore. I'd rather take a shot with Ray Rice in Baltimore, but that's a lower percentage play.

WR
Arizona has to go to the air so I'd pick up anyone from there. Made an effort to trade for Welker and hoping this is the week he steps it up. Ditto to the Eagle wides with Westbrook back.

TE
By the end of the year, I'm gonna either be a big Cooley fan or completely hate the guy. I think the only way Washington wins is if he gets off against the Steelers. Scheffler upgraded to probable so if anyone dumped and forgot him he's the difference maker in that Broncos offense. They've been atrocious without the guy.

K
There's a flow to the kicking game and I don't see any flow for the week. ARZ and STL look to score so their guys are plays. Does Denver's offense get it together? If you think so than their kicker is playable. Only news here would be to keep an eye on the Saints kicking situation for next week cuz that guy will get scoring opps.

Hoping for consistency starting next week.

These are the fans that constantly threw batteries at the Old Veterans Stadium. You could say that's devotion, except they were throwing them at Von Hayes the Philles Center Fielder at the time.

Michael Irvin took a huge hit there once upon a time. As they were wheeling the guy out on a stretcher with a neckbrace put on him, Eagles fans were trying to pelt him with snowballs.

Oh, and when things were going bad this past August they were taking their frustrations out on Jimmy Rollins. Before that they were scapegoating Brett Myers. Year before they booed the hell out of Pat "The Bat" Burrell.

Now they're jumping around in the streets like they were behind them all the way. Same people that probably booed the hell out of the NL MVP from last year.

Great fans. I guess its a better scene than if Tampa won and all of 10 people were jumping up and down in the streets.

I keep picturing Homer Simpson and his "devotion" to the Springfield Isotopes. Waiting till the end of the season than when they're on the verge buying up the ball cap and flag. Then when trouble hits, he calls them losers and "knew" they'd lose. And if they win, of course he backed them all the way. D'Oh.

Congrats to the Phillies, still can't stand your fans.

The Comics Pull List (Oct. 29)

October 28th 2008 05:49
You know, Final Crisis #4 was more interesting than I thought it would have been. More interesting than the Secret Invasion books I picked up last week. Onto what's coming out this week.

Justice League of America #26 - The artwork on this series has been great. The covers give a classic JLofA feel to them. With all that being said, I just can't get into this book. Seems like all style and no substance. Vixen and Animal Man star in this arc. Love Animal Man, so a maybe from me just for him.

Teen Titans #64 - The title that got me back into comics was Young Justice. This title had that YJ feel to it up until that Terror Titans arc. Not for me anymore.

Avengers Initiative #18 - I was thinking this title would end up being like West Coast Avengers or Justice League Europe. Shockingly, its turned into one of the maybe 4 books I automatically pick up every month. Good writing, good art and good storytelling tends to do that I guess. Secret Invasion tie-in and more teasing on the identity of Mutant Zero. They seem to be hinting at a Jean Grey connection, but who knows.

Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #3 - This is supposed to be a controversial issue. And every preview/hint is pointing to sex. And if that's the case than dealing with sex as a teen is somewhat controversial. Here's the thing. Comics don't skew young anymore. Not really young. Most of the time I've been into a store there are more teenagers than kids, but I think the market has skewed older than even teens. So how controversial is the issue when more people that pick up the title are over say 16? But I digress. USM always a good pickup.

Spawn #185 - Spawn has hit over 180 issues. Stopped caring after 50. Think this book could still be fresh if it were in the Marvel/DCU. But it gets pidgeonholed to the battle between Heaven/Hell in this format.

Not much jumping out at me this week so I'll probably just pick up the Initiative book next week.

Fantasy Postmortem (NFL Week 8)

October 27th 2008 19:43
The NFL got what it needed in England/Europe. An exciting, in the air game with LT stepping up. The only things that could have made it better would have been the Reggie Bush from a few weeks ago and a couple of 50 yard field goals to keep the Futbol fans happy. Waaay better than the last game in England.

This the same club?

October 26th 2008 20:14
Actually went out Friday night when my friends wanted to go out and party. Not a party type of guy but you have to hang out with your friends whenever you can. So we hopped a train to NYC and went to a couple of clubs.

Seeing as how my drink of choice is pepsi/club soda my memories of the night are pretty accurate. Clubs in NYC are a very ecclectic mix. The first one we went to was relatively quiet and a place to grab a bite before really going out. Light rock played (not blared) while we had some sandwiches and drinks in a booth. After we were done, we went to a more techno type of place with the different colored lights reflecting off the mist/smoke in the air. And the last club we went to was similar to the techno club except more people

HSX: How to kill a fun game

October 22nd 2008 23:16
Anyone that stumbled onto my blog should know that I'm into fantasy sports. A friend of mine turned me onto a website called HSX a couple of years ago that is like a weird amalgammation of fantasy sport/Hollywood/the stock market.

And after I figured out how to play the game I got into it. Predicting how the movie stocks will do based on their real world counterpart performs that weekend. Thinking about what a StarBond will do when when movie comes off the 5 movie trailing average of a bond. Taking advantage of the little parts of the game that helps with your gains

The Comics Pull List (Oct. 22)

Tons of books last week to sift through for all types of fans. The number of readable titles this week are down, so that should give the wallets a break.

Fantasy Postmortem (NFL Week 7)

October 20th 2008 04:37
I had so much trouble with this week that I noted it would be a weird week and was it ever. Some things were common sense, but most of the happenings were from out of the blue. The top QBs didn't come from the top tier, ditto the halfbacks.

Say hi to your mother.....um, yeah

October 19th 2008 19:21
Don't get it. Wasn't that funny last Saturday night. Wasn't funny last night, even with the actual Mark Wahlberg in the sketch.

I know its comedy and you have to try some stuff, but I just didn't get it. So if you're trying to make a caricature of the guy, shouldn't you take it over the top? Since you're referring to his career as Marky Mark, shouldn't you be doing it in like Calvin Klein briefs or wanna-be looking gear or something? Shouldn't you be saying "Word to your Mother"? Or was it trying to say he changed so its no longer that old line? And has he been talking to animals or is that some kind of PETA or Planet of the Apes reference

Okay, hate is a strong word. But the kiddies will probably cry or have that look like they were sucking on a sour gumball. And I'm probably beating a dead horse here, but I'm just posting based on what I"ve seen the last month so I don't care.

Its two years after launch and I don't see any Wii consoles on the store shelves here in the US. Over the course of the last month, been to various spots in NYC, Northern-Central-Southern NJ, and Pennsylvania and have seen the console available in exactly 2 stores. And one of those stores was the Nintendo World in NYC which is supposed to always have them

The Life and Times of Tim

October 17th 2008 05:39
It looks like HBO has found a successor to Arli$$ in the unfunny comedy sitcom category in The Life and Times of Tim.

This show was envisioned as a live-action comedy apparently but instead sucks in animated form. The first episode was ok plot wise, even though it wasn't that funny. The second episode's only "funny" moments/lines came from boxing with an old guy and threatening his probably also old wife sexually. So basically the only comedic aspect of the episode was telling the old guy you're gonna beat him up and rape his geriatric wife

Fantasy NFL Week 7

October 17th 2008 04:45
Not much for this week. All games seem like they'll play how you'd expect them to play. The games that look like they'll go to the air probably will. The low scoring games look like low scoring games. Captain Obvious type of week.

Fantasy NHL (Week 2)

October 16th 2008 20:59
The NHL is a really perplexing league to me. For the US sport fan, hockey is probably the 6th most popular sport in the country. And even that can be debatable. The 80s/early 90s are long gone and so is this sport's popularity in the US.

The solution to this problem was obvious to the NHL though. Move teams out of Canada, put more teams in the South/Southwest, and move to the Versus network off of ESPN because they offer more cash (Cash is great, but you killed the sport's brand value). No truth to the rumour that a Mexico franchise is in the works. But would it honestly surprise anyone

Plenty to choose from this week and plenty of appeal to any tastes and demos. Tons of Manga releases, a couple of Young Reader releases, and of course plenty of major companies and indy fare to choose from.

The World ends in 2012

October 11th 2008 19:52
Bought the Cult of Cartman dvd set to kill the weekend. Each episode of this "best of" South Park set has a lesson/preview/vignette featuring Eric Cartman. One of his lessons concluded with "and remember, the world ends in 2012".

That just got me to thinking how that idea is going to be spread even further in the next couple of years. Here's a pretty basic summary of the idea, basic because I'm not a New Age type and haven't devoted myself to studying Mayan culture.

South Park's season premiere

October 9th 2008 23:41
Wow, South Park sure has come a long way as a show.

Honestly, when it first started I found it funny for completely different reasons than I do now. It used to be irreverent, over-the-top humor with the novelty of little kids cursing and making light of celebrities.

So, one of the main characters gets a phone call. Gets threatened with her family being killed if she doesn't comply. And she gets caught up in some illegal activity.

This was a great plot when I saw it 2-3 years ago when it was an indy film called Cavite.

And you thought Congress didn't pass the original bill because they were looking out for you.

They were just holding out to take care of their friends. Oh, and now CNN is offended when they were part of the Great Depression/Armageddon spin that was so desperate to get this thing passed.

Mr. Do and my wasted childhood

October 3rd 2008 18:27
I was at the mall last night to buy a shirt or two and I passed by the arcade. The arcade was rather bright with more kiddie type activities.

A mini skee ball game, basketball and the like litter the room. There wasn't one pinball game at all. And about half of the actual video games were racing based or shooting based.

Ok, not me personally, but middle class Americans who don't want to give money to BAD Wall Street companies.

His initial statement blamed Barrack Obama and the Democrats for not passing the bill. So you and your leadership got only 1/3 or your party to vote for the bill you think will save the economy, but you blame the people that got 2/3 of their party to go along with it.
